The WPEPME08/SP is an IP65 PME consumer unit pre-fitted with a 40A C Curve Type A RCBO, integrated PME fault detection relays, and a Type 2 Surge Protection Device (SPD). It ensures EV charger installations comply with 18th Edition Amendment 2 without the need for an earth rod, by disconnecting live, neutral, and earth conductors on detection of a PME or PEN fault.
This unit is ideal for EV charge points, renewable systems, and domestic or commercial installs where both surge defence and PME compliance are required. The SPD protects against transient overvoltage events, while the RCBO provides full overload and leakage protection in one device.
Installer Tip: Use the SP variant when surge protection is required by design or client specification. For a simpler PME-only version, see the WPEPME08/C40.

Does this unit remove the need for an earth rod?
Yes. The integrated PME detection system disconnects all conductors on PEN fault, so no earth rod is required as long as the EV charger has DC leakage protection.
What’s the benefit of the SP variant?
It includes a Type 2 SPD for transient surge protection, protecting sensitive EV charger electronics from voltage spikes.
What happens when a PME fault is detected?
The unit isolates live, neutral, and earth within 4–5 seconds. It auto-resets after undervoltage but requires a manual reset after overvoltage trips.
