PME Fault Detection Devices
Our PME fault detection units (also called PEN fault protection devices) are designed for EV chargers, outdoor supplies, and PME electrical systems. They monitor the supply and instantly disconnect if a PEN fault is detected, preventing dangerous touch voltages on exposed metalwork. Every unit is fully 18th Edition Amendment 2 compliant and trusted by installers across the UK.

Whether you’re wiring a domestic EV charger, protecting a commercial car park installation, or setting up outdoor supplies like heat pumps and garden distribution boards, PME detection provides the required disconnection protection without needing a separate earth rod.
- EV ready – essential for car chargers on PME/TN-C-S supplies
- Single & three-phase devices – flexible options for all installs
- Built-in SPD protection – available on selected consumer units (e.g. 8-Way PME Metal Consumer Unit)
- Fast install – compact, pre-tested units designed for electricians

Why PME Fault Detection Matters
PME (Protective Multiple Earthing) systems are common in the UK, but they carry a unique risk: if the PEN conductor fails, exposed metal parts can become live. Standard RCDs and MCBs won’t detect this fault – which is why a dedicated PME fault detection device is now a requirement for EV charger installs under BS 7671.
Key Applications
- EV charging points – meets IET Wiring Regulations without an earth rod
- Outdoor circuits – protects supplies to garages, outbuildings, or garden lighting
- Heat pumps & renewables – ensures safe PME connection for inverter-driven loads
- Commercial sites – car parks, depots, and industrial PME-fed systems
Trusted Supply & Compliance
All PME detection devices supplied by Power & Data UK are UK-tested, BS EN certified, and backed by full manufacturer warranties. Many models combine PEN fault protection with Type 2 SPD surge protection, saving space and install time.

FAQs
Do I need a separate earth rod with PME protection?
No – PME detection devices are designed to disconnect safely without additional earth rods, provided they are installed correctly under BS 7671.
What’s the difference between PME and PEN fault protection?
They refer to the same issue: detecting a broken PEN conductor on TN-C-S supplies. The device cuts off power to prevent dangerous voltages.
Are PME devices mandatory for EV chargers?
Yes – where the supply is PME and no earth rod is installed, a certified PEN fault detection device or consumer unit must be used.
