Type A RCDs are designed to detect AC and pulsed DC residual currents, making them the correct choice for today’s inverter-driven appliances, EV chargers, heat pumps, induction hobs and most modern domestic circuits. They provide fast, reliable disconnection where smooth DC leakage is unlikely but pulsed DC is present.
Unlike older AC-type devices, Type A RCDs remain stable and responsive when equipment introduces DC components into the circuit. They are suitable for single-phase installations and are available in a range of current ratings and sensitivities for different protective requirements.
Type A RCDs are now considered the standard for general-purpose protection in most new builds and rewires, offering improved resilience and safety compared to legacy AC-type devices.

Type A RCDs detect AC and pulsating DC residual currents. They are widely used with modern electronic loads, but the correct RCD type, rated current, sensitivity, pole format and any time-delay characteristic must come from the equipment instructions and installation design.
Typically used on suitable single-phase installations. Confirm current rating, residual operating current and coordination with the associated overcurrent protection.
Used on suitable three-phase arrangements. All monitored conductors must pass through the device as required by the supply and manufacturer instructions.
Specialist devices can support selectivity or improve stability in appropriate applications. They are not interchangeable with standard 30mA additional protection.
