EV Consumer Units for EV Chargers
EV consumer units provide dedicated circuit protection for electric vehicle charger installations. Browse EV charger consumer units with SPD protection, Type A RCBOs, Type B RCD options, IP65 outdoor enclosures and PME/PEN fault detection for domestic and commercial installs.
These EV charging boards are designed to help installers provide a neat, dedicated supply for wallbox chargers, garage chargers and outdoor EV charging points, with protection matched to the charger and site requirements.
Quick answer: Most EV charger installs use a dedicated EV consumer unit with the correct RCBO/RCD type, surge protection where specified, and PEN fault protection where required by the earthing arrangement.

Common EV consumer unit options include:
- EV consumer units with SPD: for surge-protected charger circuits
- IP65 outdoor EV consumer units: for exposed or external installs
- Mini EV consumer units: compact boards for single charger supplies
- PME fault detection units: for installations requiring PEN fault protection
- Type A or Type B protection: selected based on the charger manufacturer’s requirements
Always confirm charger instructions, earthing arrangement and circuit design before selecting the final board.

What Is an EV Consumer Unit?
An EV consumer unit (sometimes called an EV charging board or EV charger fuse box) is a dedicated distribution board designed specifically for electric vehicle charging circuits. It separates the EV load from the main house installation and provides the additional protection required under modern wiring regulations.
Why Use a Dedicated EV Charging Consumer Unit?
- EV chargers draw sustained high loads
- Inverter-based charging can produce DC leakage
- Surge protection may be required or specified as part of the installation design
- PME earthing may require PEN fault detection
A dedicated EV board makes it easier to provide the correct protection, isolation and labelling for the charger circuit.
Key Protection Components Inside an EV Kit
- Surge Protection (SPD) – protects charger electronics from voltage spikes
- RCBO protection – overload and earth leakage in one device
- Type B RCD where required – for DC-sensitive chargers
- PEN fault detection – essential for PME supplies without earth rods
Domestic vs Commercial EV Distribution Units
- Domestic installs – compact 2–4 way boards for single wallbox chargers
- Garage installs – IP-rated enclosures for outbuildings
- Commercial charging – higher-capacity boards for multi-bay systems
- Outdoor setups – IP65 weatherproof EV charging enclosures
EV Charger RCD Type Explained
Most EV chargers are compatible with Type A RCBOs. However, chargers without built-in DC monitoring require Type B RCD protection. Always check the manufacturer’s installation guide before selecting the device.
Compliance & Standards
EV charger circuits should be designed and installed in accordance with BS 7671, the charger manufacturer’s instructions and the site earthing arrangement. The correct EV consumer unit depends on the charger, supply type, RCD requirements, surge protection requirements and whether PEN fault protection is needed.
