2 Pole MCBs for Safe Line & Neutral Disconnection

2 pole MCBs provide overcurrent and short-circuit protection while disconnecting both the live and neutral conductors simultaneously. They are used where full circuit isolation is required under fault conditions, or where the supply characteristics demand neutral disconnection for safe operation.

These breakers are essential for circuits fed from certain earthing arrangements, sub-mains to outbuildings, and equipment where neutral isolation is required for safety or compliance. With simultaneous breaking of both poles, they prevent back-feed and ensure full isolation for testing, maintenance and protection scenarios.

  • Simultaneous line and neutral disconnection for safer isolation
  • Ideal for sub-mains feeding garages, garden rooms and workshops
  • Suitable for TT, TN-S and mixed-earthing systems where neutral isolation is beneficial
  • B and C curve options to match load characteristics
  • Robust DIN-rail construction for distribution boards and panel builds

2 Pole MCBs are commonly used by electricians who prefer clean, full isolation on dedicated circuits or where system design requires disconnecting both conductors during a fault.

What Is a 2 Pole MCB?

A 2 pole MCB trips both the live and neutral conductors at the same time. This ensures complete isolation of the circuit, reducing the risk of back-feed, stray voltage or neutral-related hazards. It provides the same overcurrent and short-circuit protection as a single-pole device, but with enhanced safety through dual-pole breaking.

Where 2 Pole MCBs Are Used

  • Outbuildings and detached structures such as garages and garden offices
  • TT installations where neutral isolation improves safety
  • Distribution circuits supplying small consumer units or DBs
  • Machinery or equipment requiring full isolation during faults
  • Workshop and commercial environments with mixed earthing or sensitive equipment

B Curve vs C Curve 2 Pole MCBs

B Curve: Trips at 3–5 × rated current. Suited to standard loads and general circuits.

C Curve: Trips at 5–10 × rated current. Ideal for circuits with motors, compressors or higher inrush.

Why Use a 2 Pole MCB?

Unlike single-pole breakers, a 2 pole MCB isolates both conductors, making the circuit completely safe to work on and preventing unwanted neutral-to-earth paths. This is especially important where:

  • Neutral integrity is uncertain (common in older or mixed systems)
  • Back-feed risks exist
  • Full isolation is needed for inspection or maintenance
  • Sub-mains run outdoors or through different buildings

Compliance & Standards

All 2 Pole MCBs in this category comply with BS EN 60898 and support full compliance with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations when selected with the correct curve, rating and breaking capacity.

Installer Benefits

2 Pole MCBs provide added safety, predictable performance and clean isolation in environments where single-pole devices are not sufficient. They offer robust protection for sub-mains, outdoor circuits and sensitive equipment while simplifying testing and maintenance.
