The WPEPME08/C40 is an IP65 PME consumer unit for single-phase EV charging circuits. It combines a 40A C Curve Type A RCBO with PME fault monitoring in a compact, pre-wired enclosure.
This model provides overcurrent and Type A residual-current protection without a factory-fitted SPD. It is suited to designs where surge protection is not required at this point or is already coordinated elsewhere in the installation.
Installer Tip: This model includes a Type A RCBO but no factory-fitted SPD. Where the design requires local surge protection, compare the WPEPME08/SP version.
Key Features
- 40A C Curve Type A RCBO – combined overcurrent and Type A residual-current protection
- PME fault monitoring – switches line, neutral and protective conductor through the linked contactor arrangement
- IP65 enclosure – suitable for appropriately located indoor or outdoor installations
- Pre-wired assembly – built and tested before dispatch
- Automatic under-voltage recovery and manual reset following over-voltage operation
- No factory-fitted SPD – useful where surge protection is provided elsewhere
PME Fault Protection for EV Charging
The built-in monitoring arrangement checks the supply against the manufacturer’s stated under-voltage and over-voltage thresholds. When a qualifying abnormal condition is detected, the assembly operates its linked switching arrangement to disconnect line, neutral and the protective conductor. Under-voltage recovery is automatic; an over-voltage operation requires manual reset.
Final selection still depends on the charger, supply characteristics, earthing arrangement and the protective devices already present. Installation, inspection and testing must be completed by a suitably qualified person in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the current edition of BS 7671.

What protection is included?
The unit includes PME fault monitoring and a 40A C Curve Type A RCBO. It does not include a factory-fitted SPD.
Does the Type A RCBO provide 6mA DC detection?
Do not assume so. Any DC residual-current protection required by the EV charger must be confirmed from the charger and protective-device documentation.
Can this avoid a separate earth electrode?
The PME monitoring arrangement is designed for EV charging installations using automatic disconnection. Suitability must be confirmed for the particular earthing arrangement and current BS 7671 requirements.
When should I choose the SP version?
Choose WPEPME08/SP where the design requires a factory-fitted Type 2 SPD in addition to the 40A Type A RCBO.
Can it be installed outdoors?
The enclosure is rated IP65, provided the mounting method and cable entries preserve that rating.

The WPEPME08/C40 is supplied pre-wired and tested. Installation and final verification must be completed by a suitably qualified person.
- Confirm the connected charger’s residual-current requirements, including any required DC fault-current detection.
- Coordinate the 40A C Curve RCBO with the cable, load, supply and upstream protective arrangement.
- Assess whether SPD protection is required and where it is provided within the installation.
- Confirm the selected location and cable entries maintain the required IP rating.
- Test the PME monitoring, switching and reset functions during commissioning.
