The WPKPME08/SP is an IP65 PME consumer unit combining a 40A MCB, PME fault monitoring and a factory-fitted Type 2 SPD. It is intended for single-phase EV charging circuits where the required residual-current protection is provided elsewhere in the completed design.
The MCB provides overload and short-circuit protection; it does not provide residual-current protection. The connected charger and upstream arrangement must therefore be checked carefully before this MCB-based model is selected.
Installer Tip: Choose the MCB version only where suitable residual-current protection is already provided. If the consumer unit needs its own Type A RCBO, compare the WPEPME08/SP.
Key Features
- 40A MCB – overcurrent and short-circuit protection
- Type 2 SPD – factory-fitted surge protection
- PME fault monitoring – switches line, neutral and protective conductor through the linked contactor arrangement
- IP65 enclosure – suitable for appropriately located indoor or outdoor installations
- Pre-wired assembly – built and tested before dispatch
- No integral RCD or RCBO – residual-current protection must be provided by the complete circuit design
PME Fault Protection for EV Charging
The built-in monitoring arrangement checks the supply against the manufacturer’s stated under-voltage and over-voltage thresholds. When a qualifying abnormal condition is detected, the assembly operates its linked switching arrangement to disconnect line, neutral and the protective conductor. Under-voltage recovery is automatic; an over-voltage operation requires manual reset.
Final selection still depends on the charger, supply characteristics, earthing arrangement and the protective devices already present. Installation, inspection and testing must be completed by a suitably qualified person in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the current edition of BS 7671.

Does this unit include RCD protection?
No. It contains a 40A MCB, which provides overcurrent and short-circuit protection. Suitable residual-current protection must be confirmed elsewhere in the design.
What does the SP suffix indicate?
This version includes a factory-fitted Type 2 surge protection device.
Can this avoid a separate earth electrode?
The PME monitoring arrangement is designed for EV charging installations using automatic disconnection. Suitability must be confirmed for the particular installation and current BS 7671 requirements.
What is the RCBO alternative?
WPEPME08/SP combines the same broad PME and SPD functions with a 40A C Curve Type A RCBO.
Can it be installed outdoors?
The enclosure is rated IP65, provided the installation preserves that rating.

The WPKPME08/SP is supplied pre-wired and tested. Installation and final verification must be completed by a suitably qualified person.
- Verify that suitable AC and DC residual-current protection is provided by the charger or elsewhere in the circuit.
- Coordinate the 40A MCB with the cable, load, fault level and upstream protective arrangement.
- Keep the SPD earth connection as short and direct as practicable.
- Confirm the selected location and cable entries maintain the required IP rating.
- Test the PME monitoring, switching and reset functions during commissioning.
