RCBOs – Single & Three Phase
RCBOs (Residual Current Breaker with Overload) combine the functions of an RCD and MCB in a single device – protecting against both overloads and earth leakage faults. We stock Type A RCBOs, Type B DC-sensitive RCBOs, and High Immunity RCBOs in a wide range of ratings and configurations, with next-day UK delivery available.

Available in single and three-phase options, our RCBOs are suitable for domestic, commercial, and industrial installations. They’re particularly recommended for EV chargers, heat pumps, and renewable energy systems, where sensitive inverter-driven loads demand advanced protection.
- Type A RCBOs – standard for most UK domestic installs
- Type B RCBOs – DC-sensitive, required for EVs, solar, and heat pumps
- High Immunity RCBOs – reduce nuisance tripping in noisy circuits
- Single & Three Phase RCBOs – cover all circuit types and loads
All RCBOs are BS EN 61009 compliant, backed by a 2-year warranty, and shipped from our UK warehouse. See our returns policy for easy returns.

What Is an RCBO?
An RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overload) combines the protection of an RCD and MCB in one compact device. It trips when a circuit is overloaded, short-circuited, or when leakage current is detected – offering the highest level of circuit safety.
Types of RCBOs
- Type A – detects AC and pulsed DC faults; the UK standard for most new installations. Example: A-Type RCBO available in multiple ratings.
- Type B – provides protection against smooth DC faults, required for EV chargers, solar PV inverters, and heat pumps. See our 4-Pole RCBO for three-phase renewables.
- High Immunity – designed for circuits with electrical noise (common in industrial or renewable setups), reducing false tripping. Popular choice: 1-Module High Immunity RCBO.
Single vs Three Phase RCBOs
We supply both single-pole RCBOs for domestic circuits and three-phase RCBOs for commercial and industrial boards. Three-phase RCBOs are used in distribution panels where individual circuit protection is required across multiple phases.
Applications
- EV charging – ensures compliance with BS 7671 and manufacturer requirements.
- Heat pumps – protects sensitive inverter-driven equipment against leakage and overload.
- Solar PV & battery storage – covers DC leakage risks from renewable systems.
- Board upgrades – modernises older RCD/MCB setups with individual RCBO protection.
FAQs on RCBOs
What’s the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?
An RCD protects against earth leakage only, while an RCBO adds overload and short-circuit protection – combining both in one device.
Do I need a Type B RCBO?
If you’re installing EV chargers, heat pumps, or solar inverters, yes. Type B devices detect smooth DC currents which Type A devices may miss.
Why use RCBOs instead of a split-load RCD board?
RCBOs give each circuit its own protection. This avoids nuisance tripping that can cut power to multiple circuits at once, making them the preferred option for new builds.
