RCBOs – Single & Three Phase
RCBOs (Residual Current Breaker with Overload) combine the functions of an RCD and MCB in a single device – protecting against both overloads and earth leakage faults. We stock Type A RCBOs, Type B DC-sensitive RCBOs, and High Immunity RCBOs in a wide range of ratings and configurations, with next-day UK delivery available.

Available in single and three-phase options, our RCBOs are suitable for domestic, commercial, and industrial installations. They’re particularly recommended for EV chargers, heat pumps, and renewable energy systems, where sensitive inverter-driven loads demand advanced protection.
- Type A RCBOs – standard for most UK domestic installs
- Type B RCBOs – DC-sensitive, required for EVs, solar, and heat pumps
- High Immunity RCBOs – reduce nuisance tripping in noisy circuits
- Single & Three Phase RCBOs – cover all circuit types and loads
All RCBOs are BS EN 61009 compliant, backed by a 2-year warranty, and shipped from our UK warehouse. See our returns policy for easy returns.

Why Do Heat Pumps Need Special Consumer Units?
Heat pumps draw higher inrush currents and generate harmonic “noise” from their inverters. A dedicated consumer unit ensures safe operation and protects both the system and the property’s wider electrical installation.
Key Protections Explained
- Surge Protection (SPD) – defends the heat-pump inverter and control boards against transient overvoltage. Popular option: Heat Pump Consumer Unit WME-HP40C.
- Type A or B RCDs – Type B devices provide DC fault protection, recommended for inverter-driven systems. See our Heat Pump Type B RCD (WHP240-030).
- RCBOs – allow individual circuit protection, preventing one fault from taking out the whole supply. Explore our full RCBO range.
- IP-rated enclosures – protect against moisture and dust where heat pumps are mounted outdoors.
Compliant with 18th Edition Wiring Regs
All of our boards are BS EN 61439-3 certified and built for Amendment 2 of the 18th Edition. This ensures every install meets the latest UK wiring-safety standards – giving confidence to both installers and homeowners.
Applications
These units are suitable for:
- Air Source Heat Pumps – the most common retrofit option in UK homes
- Ground Source Heat Pumps – systems with higher current demand
- Hybrid installs – where heat pumps are paired with solar PV surge protection, three-phase boards, or EV charging
- Light commercial properties – offices, retail, or small industrial units using renewable heating
FAQs on Heat Pump Consumer Units
Do I need a separate consumer unit for a heat pump?
Yes – most installers recommend or require a dedicated board to meet regs and handle the electrical characteristics of heat pumps.
Should I use a Type A or Type B RCD?
Type A is the minimum standard, but Type B RCDs are strongly advised for heat pumps due to potential DC fault currents.
Can I connect solar and EV charging to the same board?
Yes – many of our heat pump boards are designed with additional ways for renewable system expansion.
