EV Consumer Units for EV Charger Installations

EV consumer units provide a dedicated, regulation-compliant supply for electric vehicle chargers. Under BS 7671 (18th Edition Amendment 2), EV circuits must include surge protection, appropriate RCD/RCBO protection, and – where required – PEN fault disconnection. Our EV charging consumer units are pre-configured to meet these requirements.

Quick answer: An EV charger requires its own dedicated consumer unit with SPD protection and the correct RCD/RCBO type. Standard house boards are not compliant for new EV installations.

Each EV kit includes the core protection required for safe charging:

  • Type 2 Surge Protection Device (SPD) – mandatory for EV circuits
  • Type A or Type B RCBO – depending on charger DC leakage requirements
  • PEN fault detection (PME protection) where earthing conditions require disconnection
  • IP65 outdoor options for weather-exposed installs

Whether you are installing a domestic wallbox, a garage charger, or a commercial multi-bay system, these EV distribution units are built to simplify compliance and reduce time on site.

What Is an EV Consumer Unit?

An EV consumer unit (sometimes called an EV charging board or EV charger fuse box) is a dedicated distribution board designed specifically for electric vehicle charging circuits. It separates the EV load from the main house installation and provides the additional protection required under modern wiring regulations.

Why a Dedicated EV Charging Consumer Unit Is Required

  • EV chargers draw sustained high loads
  • Inverter-based charging can produce DC leakage
  • Surge protection is required under BS 7671
  • PME earthing may require PEN fault detection

Installing a standard split-load board will not meet current EV compliance requirements.

Key Protection Components Inside an EV Kit

  • Surge Protection (SPD) – protects charger electronics from voltage spikes
  • RCBO protection – overload and earth leakage in one device
  • Type B RCD where required – for DC-sensitive chargers
  • PEN fault detection – essential for PME supplies without earth rods

Domestic vs Commercial EV Distribution Units

  • Domestic installs – compact 2–4 way boards for single wallbox chargers
  • Garage installs – IP-rated enclosures for outbuildings
  • Commercial charging – higher-capacity boards for multi-bay systems
  • Outdoor setups – IP65 weatherproof EV charging enclosures

EV Charger RCD Type Explained

Most EV chargers are compatible with Type A RCBOs. However, chargers without built-in DC monitoring require Type B RCD protection. Always check the manufacturer’s installation guide before selecting the device.

Compliance & Standards

All EV consumer units supplied by Power & Data UK comply with BS EN 61439-3 and are designed to meet the requirements of BS 7671 (18th Edition Amendment 2). Devices are UK stocked and backed by manufacturer warranty.
