Choosing the Right EV Consumer Unit

Not all EV installs are the same – the right consumer unit depends on the charger type, location, and earthing arrangement. Our EV kits are designed to cover every scenario while keeping your installs compliant and future-proof.

Key Considerations

  • SPD protection – now a requirement under BS 7671 for EV circuits.
  • PEN fault detection – essential for PME supplies where earth rods aren’t used.
  • RCD/RCBO type – Type A or Type B devices depending on charger specification.
  • IP rating – IP65 enclosures for outdoor or weather-exposed installs.
  • Size – from mini 2-way garage boards to larger multi-way setups.

FAQs

Do I need a dedicated consumer unit for an EV charger?
Yes. The 18th Edition requires a dedicated supply with surge protection and RCD/RCBO protection – a standard house board won’t meet these requirements.

Which RCD type do I need?
Most chargers are fine with Type A, but some models with DC leakage risk require Type B. Always check manufacturer documentation before ordering.

What if my property uses PME earthing?
You’ll need an EV unit with PEN fault detection. We stock fully compliant PME units designed to disconnect supply safely in the event of a fault.
