Circuit Protection Devices – MCBs, RCDs & RCBOs

Shop circuit protection devices for domestic, commercial and specialist installations, including MCBs, RCDs, RCBOs and surge protection. Use the filters to narrow the range by device type, rating and application.

Device selection depends on the circuit design, load characteristics, prospective fault current, required residual-current response and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

Quick guide: MCBs provide overcurrent protection; RCDs respond to residual current; RCBOs combine both functions for individual circuits. RCD type, trip curve, current rating and breaking capacity must be selected for the installation.

  • MCBs: B, C and D curves for different load and inrush characteristics
  • RCDs: Type A, Type B and specialist time-delay options
  • RCBOs: combined overcurrent and residual-current protection per circuit
  • Specialist protection: high-immunity devices, AFDDs and surge protection

Choosing the Right Circuit Protection

Start with the circuit design and connected equipment—not a device label in isolation. The protective device must suit the load, conductor capacity, earthing arrangement, prospective fault current and any residual-current characteristics identified by the equipment manufacturer. Installation and verification should be completed by a competent electrical professional to the applicable edition of BS 7671.

MCBs

Miniature circuit breakers provide protection against overload and short-circuit current. Select the current rating, trip curve and breaking capacity from the installation design and load characteristics.

RCDs

Residual current devices disconnect when the monitored current imbalance reaches their operating threshold. The correct type and sensitivity depend on the application and expected residual-current waveform.

RCBOs

RCBOs combine overcurrent and residual-current protection in one device. Per-circuit protection can improve fault discrimination and limit disruption elsewhere in the installation.

Specification Checklist

  • Rated current: coordinate with design current, conductor capacity and upstream protection.
  • Trip curve: select for the load’s normal operating and inrush characteristics.
  • Breaking capacity: verify against the prospective fault current at the installation point.
  • RCD type: match the residual-current waveform and manufacturer requirements; Type B is used where smooth DC residual current can occur.
  • Poles and neutral switching: confirm the supply arrangement and required conductor isolation.
