RCBOs – Single & Three Phase Protection
RCBOs (Residual Current Breakers with Overload) provide combined protection against overload, short-circuit and earth leakage faults in a single device. An RCBO replaces the need for a separate MCB and RCD, offering independent circuit protection within modern consumer units and distribution boards.
Our range includes Type A RCBOs, Type B DC-sensitive protection, High Immunity RCBOs, and three-phase RCBO solutions, available in multiple current ratings and breaking capacities.
What does an RCBO do? It disconnects supply in the event of overload, short circuit or earth leakage - protecting both wiring and occupants from electrical hazards.

What Types of RCBO Are Available?
Different RCBO types are specified depending on the electrical characteristics of the installation and the connected equipment.
Type A RCBO
Type A RCBOs detect AC and pulsating DC earth leakage currents. They are the standard choice for most modern UK domestic installations and comply with 18th Edition requirements.
Type B RCBO
Type B RCBOs detect smooth DC leakage and are used for inverter-driven loads such as EV chargers, solar PV systems and heat pumps. They are required where DC fault currents may be present.
High Immunity RCBO
High Immunity RCBOs are designed to reduce nuisance tripping in electrically noisy environments. They are commonly used in circuits supplying IT equipment, refrigeration systems and commercial installations.
Single Phase vs Three Phase RCBO
Single phase RCBOs are used in standard domestic consumer units. Three phase RCBOs are required in commercial or industrial installations where balanced multi-phase protection is needed.
When Should You Use an RCBO?
RCBOs are recommended when independent circuit protection is required. Unlike split-load RCD boards, each circuit is protected individually, meaning one fault does not disconnect the entire installation.
- Domestic rewires and new builds
- EV charger circuits
- Heat pump supplies
- Commercial distribution boards
- Circuits where discrimination is required
RCBO Standards & Compliance
All RCBOs supplied by Power & Data UK comply with BS EN 61009 and meet the requirements of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Devices are DIN-rail mounted and compatible with modern metal consumer units.
