EV Surge Protection Explained

EV chargers draw high loads and are sensitive to transient overvoltage. That’s why the 18th Edition wiring regulations make surge protection a requirement for EV installations. Without an SPD, voltage spikes from the grid or nearby lightning strikes can damage the charger and connected electronics.

Do EV Chargers Already Have Built-In Surge Protection?

Some EV chargers include limited surge suppression, but BS 7671 requires a dedicated SPD at the supply board. Using a compliant EV consumer unit ensures you meet regulations and keep the installation covered by manufacturer and insurance warranties.

Choosing the Right EV Distribution Board

Trust & Compliance

FAQs

Do I always need a Type B RCD for EV chargers?
Not always – most chargers are compatible with Type A RCDs, but certain models with DC leakage require Type B. Always check manufacturer guidance.

Can I use these boards with solar or hybrid systems?
Yes – many of our EV surge boards are designed to integrate with solar PV SPDs and heat pump boards, giving future-proof flexibility.

What’s the difference between an EV board and a standard consumer unit?
An EV-ready board is pre-fitted with the protection devices required under BS 7671: SPD, RCD/RCBO, and (where needed) PME fault detection.
