The WMEPME12/LB is a steel PME consumer unit with load balancing and kWh metering for a single-phase EV charging circuit. It combines a 40A C Curve Type A RCBO, PME fault monitoring, an adjustable load-management relay and an energy meter in one pre-wired IP40 assembly.
This model is suited to installations where available supply capacity needs to be managed and EV energy use needs to be recorded at the consumer unit. The RCBO provides Type A residual-current and overcurrent protection; any DC residual-current protection required by the charger must be confirmed separately.
Installer Tip: Use the kWh meter for local energy-use visibility. For an IP65 plastic load-balancing unit without the integral meter, compare the WPEPME12/LB.
Key Features
- 40A C Curve Type A RCBO – overcurrent and Type A residual-current protection
- Adjustable load management – 10A to 110A setting range via CT monitoring
- Integrated kWh meter – records energy passing through the EV circuit
- PME fault monitoring – linked disconnection of line, neutral and protective conductor
- IP40 steel enclosure – for suitable indoor locations
- Pre-wired and tested before dispatch
How the Load Management Works
The load-management relay uses a current transformer to monitor demand at the incoming supply. The installer sets a suitable threshold for the installation, allowing the EV charging circuit to be controlled when total demand approaches that limit.
This feature supports supply-demand management; it does not increase the capacity of the incoming supply or replace the required circuit design, protective coordination and commissioning checks.
PME Fault Monitoring
The assembly monitors the supply against the manufacturer’s stated under-voltage and over-voltage thresholds. When a qualifying abnormal condition is detected, its linked switching arrangement disconnects line, neutral and the protective conductor. Under-voltage recovery is automatic, while over-voltage operation requires manual reset.

Does WMEPME12/LB include a kWh meter?
Yes. Whitecliffe’s current product table identifies this model as a 40A C Curve load-balancing PME unit with an integral kWh meter.
What current range can be set for load management?
The manufacturer specifies an adjustable range of 10A to 110A. The setting must be selected from the actual supply and maximum-demand assessment.
Does the RCBO provide 6mA DC detection?
Do not assume so. It is identified as a Type A RCBO; any DC residual-current protection required by the charger must be confirmed separately.
Can this avoid a separate earth electrode?
The PME monitoring arrangement is designed for EV charging installations using automatic disconnection. Suitability must be confirmed for the particular earthing arrangement and current BS 7671 requirements.
Can it be installed outdoors?
No outdoor claim should be inferred from this model. Its steel enclosure is rated IP40 and should be installed in an appropriate location.

The WMEPME12/LB is supplied pre-wired and tested. Installation and commissioning must be completed by a suitably qualified person.
- Install in a suitable dry indoor location; the enclosure is rated IP40.
- Fit the supplied CT in the orientation and position shown in the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Set the load-management threshold from the measured maximum demand and available supply capacity.
- Confirm the charger’s AC and DC residual-current requirements; do not assume the Type A RCBO provides all protection required by every charger.
- Verify PME switching, load-management response, meter operation and reset behaviour during commissioning.
