Start with the circuit design and connected equipment—not a device label in isolation. The protective device must suit the load, conductor capacity, earthing arrangement, prospective fault current and any residual-current characteristics identified by the equipment manufacturer. Installation and verification should be completed by a competent electrical professional to the applicable edition of BS 7671.
Miniature circuit breakers provide protection against overload and short-circuit current. Select the current rating, trip curve and breaking capacity from the installation design and load characteristics.
Residual current devices disconnect when the monitored current imbalance reaches their operating threshold. The correct type and sensitivity depend on the application and expected residual-current waveform.
RCBOs combine overcurrent and residual-current protection in one device. Per-circuit protection can improve fault discrimination and limit disruption elsewhere in the installation.
