The IP65 PEN Fault Detection Unit with Load Balancing Relay is a regulation-ready solution for EV charger installations where PEN fault protection is mandatory. Fully compliant with BS7671:2018 Amendment 2, it isolates Live, Neutral, and Earth conductors during a fault – removing the need for a separate earth rod.
Housed in a weatherproof IP65 enclosure, this board is pre-wired for fast installation and combines PEN protection + adjustable load balancing in one compact unit. Ideal for residential driveways and commercial car parks where multiple high-demand appliances run alongside EV chargers.
Key Features
- PEN Fault Detection: Actively monitors and disconnects all conductors under fault conditions
- Adjustable Load Balancing: Relay sensitivity from 20A to 110A for smarter load management
- IP65 Enclosure: Outdoor-rated, weatherproof housing with rear knockouts
- Flexible Protection Options: Supplied with either 40A Type A RCBO or 100A Main Switch
- No Earth Rod Required: Fully compliant with 18th Edition regulations
- Pre-Wired & Installer Ready: Saves on-site time and reduces wiring errors
For full compliance, pair with our Surge Protection Devices or install alongside a dedicated consumer unit for multi-circuit EV setups.
Does this unit meet Amendment 2 PEN fault rules?
Yes. This device actively monitors Live, Neutral, and Earth conductors and disconnects safely under fault conditions — fully compliant with BS7671:2018 Amendment 2. It’s regulation-ready for EV charger installs.
Do I still need to install an earth rod?
No. This PEN Fault Detection Unit removes the need for a separate earth electrode by isolating the Earth conductor automatically under fault conditions. That’s why it’s ideal for domestic and commercial EV charge points.
What’s the difference between the RCBO and Main Switch variants?
RCBO version: Includes overload + 30mA earth leakage protection, making it the simplest all-in-one option.
Main Switch version: Choose this if you’re using separate protection downstream, e.g. in a consumer unit fitted with RCBOs or MCBs.
Is this compatible with all EV chargers?
Yes – it works with all major single-phase EV chargers that don’t have PEN protection built in. For three-phase installs, see our 3 Phase PEN Fault Protection Units.
Does it support load balancing?
Yes. The built-in relay is adjustable from 20A–110A, so it can prevent nuisance tripping when other high-demand appliances (like heat pumps or ovens) run at the same time as an EV charger.
