The WHP240-030 is a compact Type B RCD specifically designed for heat pump systems – including Vaillant and other inverter-driven installs where full DC fault protection is required. Unlike Type A or Type AC RCDs, this 2 pole device is engineered to detect smooth DC leakage currents and operate reliably at high switching frequencies above 20kHz.
Fully compliant with the 18th Edition and BS 7671 wiring regulations, it’s an essential safety component for renewable installs and inverter-driven heating systems. With a space-saving 2-module width, it integrates easily into standard consumer units using conventional busbars. For broader EV and solar use, see our B-Type RCD range.
Installer Note: Whitecliffe's Type B HP RCD is specifically designed for inverter-driven heat pump systems and has been tested to operate at frequencies above 20kHz, helping provide protection where high-frequency residual currents may be present.
- Type B RCD: Detects smooth DC leakage up to 150mA
- Frequency Tested: Verified to trip above 20kHz switching noise
- 2 pole, 2 module design for compact installs
- Required for Vaillant heat pump compliance
- BS 7671 & 18th Edition compliant for domestic and commercial use
Why choose a Type B HP RCD instead of a standard Type B RCD?
Modern inverter-driven heat pumps can generate smooth DC and high-frequency residual currents. While standard Type B RCDs provide smooth DC fault protection, Whitecliffe's Type B HP RCD has been specifically developed for heat pump applications and tested to operate at frequencies above 20kHz.
This makes it particularly suitable for modern heat pump systems where higher-frequency electrical characteristics may be present.
Why is a Type B RCD needed for heat pump systems?
Heat pumps and inverter-driven systems can generate smooth DC leakage currents. Type B RCDs are the only devices capable of detecting and disconnecting in those fault conditions – especially for compliance with manufacturers like Vaillant. For EV charging, see our B-Type RCD EV Kit.
Can I use a Type A RCD instead?
No – Type A RCDs do not detect smooth DC faults. This could leave the system unprotected in the event of leakage through the inverter or drive circuit. For standard AC + DC pulsating protection, use a Type A RCD.
Does this work with standard consumer units?
Yes – the 2-module width allows installation on a standard DIN rail using a conventional busbar setup. For larger installs, pair with our empty metal enclosures.
What’s the tripping threshold?
This RCD trips at a minimum of 150mA leakage for frequencies above 1kHz, making it suitable for high-frequency switching loads like heat pumps and inverter-driven systems.
Is this compliant with UK regulations?
Yes – it meets BS EN 61008-1 and is suitable for 18th Edition Amendment 2 compliant installs. For additional protection against surges, pair with a Type 2 SPD.
