RCBOs
RCBOs provide combined overload, short-circuit and residual current protection for individual circuits. They are commonly used in consumer units and distribution boards where each circuit needs its own protective device instead of relying on shared RCD protection.
Browse Type A RCBOs, high immunity RCBOs, mini Type A RCBOs, 10kA RCBOs, EV RCBOs and three-phase RCBO options for domestic, commercial, EV, heat pump and inverter-fed circuits.
Quick answer: An RCBO combines MCB and RCD functions in one device, protecting a single circuit against overload, short circuit and earth leakage faults.

What Types of RCBO Are Available?
Different RCBO types are specified depending on the electrical characteristics of the installation and the connected equipment.
Type A RCBO
Type A RCBOs detect AC and pulsating DC earth leakage currents. They are the standard choice for most modern UK domestic installations and comply with 18th Edition requirements.
Type B / DC-Sensitive Protection
Some EV, solar and inverter-fed circuits may require protection capable of detecting smooth DC residual current. Where this is specified, check whether the installation requires a dedicated Type B RCD, a suitable RCBO arrangement, or another manufacturer-approved protective device.
High Immunity RCBO
High Immunity RCBOs are designed to reduce nuisance tripping in electrically noisy environments. They are commonly used in circuits supplying IT equipment, refrigeration systems and commercial installations.
Single Phase vs Three Phase RCBO
Single phase RCBOs are used in standard domestic consumer units. Three phase RCBOs are required in commercial or industrial installations where balanced multi-phase protection is needed.
When Should You Use an RCBO?
RCBOs are recommended when independent circuit protection is required. Unlike split-load RCD boards, each circuit is protected individually, meaning one fault does not disconnect the entire installation.
- Domestic rewires and new builds
- EV charger circuits
- Heat pump supplies
- Commercial distribution boards
- Circuits where discrimination is required
RCBO Standards & Compliance
RCBOs are typically manufactured to BS EN 61009. Always select the correct device type, current rating, breaking capacity and curve for the circuit design, connected equipment and consumer unit compatibility.
