High Immunity RCBOs for Noise-Prone Circuits

High immunity RCBOs are designed for circuits where standard protection may be more prone to nuisance tripping. They are commonly used on EV charger supplies, solar PV circuits, UPS equipment, heat pumps and other inverter-led loads where harmonics, leakage current or electrical noise can cause unwanted disconnections.

This range is focused on RCBOs for nuisance tripping prevention, not general Type A RCBO selection. For standard Type A devices, view our Type A RCBOs. Use this collection where circuit stability is the priority on sensitive or noise-prone installs.

Quick answer: A high immunity RCBO helps reduce unwanted tripping caused by leakage current, harmonics and transient electrical noise. It is typically used on inverter-led circuits such as EV chargers, solar PV, UPS systems and some renewable installs.

High immunity RCBOs still provide combined residual current and overcurrent protection, but are built to improve circuit stability where standard RCBOs may trip too easily. This makes them useful for installers dealing with intermittent faults, sensitive equipment or repeated callouts caused by nuisance tripping.

  • Reduced nuisance tripping – useful on circuits affected by leakage current or electrical noise
  • Inverter-led circuit support – commonly used for EV, solar, UPS and heat pump loads
  • Overload and earth leakage protection – RCBO protection in one device
  • Bi-directional and switched neutral options – available on selected models

When to Use High Immunity RCBOs

A high immunity RCBO is best used where the circuit needs better resistance to unwanted tripping. This is common on installations with inverter-driven equipment, electronic loads or sensitive devices that can create leakage current, harmonics or transient disturbance.

They are especially useful when a standard RCBO keeps tripping without a clear hard fault, or where the installer wants to reduce the risk of nuisance tripping from the start.

High Immunity RCBOs vs Standard RCBOs

Both standard RCBOs and high immunity RCBOs provide combined overcurrent and residual current protection. The difference is circuit stability. High immunity models are designed to be more tolerant of electrical noise that can trigger unwanted trips.

RCBO Type Best Used For Main Benefit
Standard RCBO General domestic and commercial circuits Combined earth leakage and overload protection
High immunity RCBO EV, solar, UPS, heat pump and inverter-led circuits Better resistance to nuisance tripping

RCBOs for Nuisance Tripping

Nuisance tripping can be caused by cumulative leakage current, harmonics, transient surges or electronic equipment behaviour. On some circuits, replacing a standard device with a high immunity RCBO can help improve reliability while maintaining the required protection.

This can be useful on jobs where the customer reports intermittent tripping, especially where EV chargers, solar inverters, UPS units or other electronic loads are present.

High Immunity RCBO Applications

  • EV charger circuits – useful where charger behaviour or circuit conditions cause unwanted trips
  • Solar PV circuits – commonly used around inverter-led loads and leakage-sensitive installations
  • UPS systems – helps maintain more stable protection on sensitive backup supplies
  • Heat pump circuits – useful where inverter-driven equipment affects circuit behaviour
  • Commercial boards – suited to circuits with multiple electronic loads or noisy equipment

High Immunity, Surge Protection and Inverter Circuits

High immunity RCBOs help reduce unwanted trips, but they do not replace surge protection. Where transient overvoltage is also a concern, use suitable surge protection devices alongside the correct RCBO selection.

For EV and renewable installations, you may also need to consider Type B RCDs, EV RCBOs, heat pump consumer units or solar combiner boxes, depending on the circuit design.

High Immunity RCBO FAQs

What is a high immunity RCBO?

A high immunity RCBO is an RCBO designed to reduce unwanted tripping caused by leakage current, harmonics and electrical noise while still providing residual current and overcurrent protection.

When should I use a high immunity RCBO?

Use one where nuisance tripping is a known issue or where the circuit includes inverter-led equipment such as EV chargers, solar inverters, UPS units or heat pumps.

Are high immunity RCBOs the same as standard Type A RCBOs?

No. Many high immunity RCBOs are Type A devices, but this range is specifically focused on improved tripping stability for noise-prone circuits. For general Type A RCBOs, use the dedicated Type A RCBO category.

Can a high immunity RCBO stop intermittent tripping?

It can help where the tripping is caused by leakage current, harmonics or electrical noise. It will not solve a genuine wiring fault, overload or equipment fault.

Are high immunity RCBOs suitable for solar PV?

They can be suitable for some solar PV circuits, especially where inverter behaviour or leakage current may cause nuisance tripping. Always check the inverter manufacturer’s requirements.

Do high immunity RCBOs replace surge protection?

No. High immunity RCBOs and surge protection devices solve different issues. RCBOs provide residual current and overcurrent protection, while SPDs protect against transient overvoltage.
