Description

The WMRC40BSP metal EV consumer unit brings a 40A B curve Type A RCBO and Type 2 surge protection together in a compact indoor enclosure. It gives installers a clearly specified protection assembly for an EV charger circuit, with twin-handle fault indication to help make subsequent fault finding easier.

Why choose the WMRC40BSP?

  • Protection supplied together: the RCBO combines overload, short-circuit and 30mA residual-current protection, while the SPD addresses transient overvoltages.
  • Easier fault identification: the RCBO’s separate MCB and RCD handles help an electrician distinguish an overcurrent trip from a residual-current fault.
  • Compact indoor fit: the IP40 metal enclosure measures 110 × 175 × 91mm (W × H × D), useful where wall space is limited.
  • Practical cable access: top and bottom 25/32mm knockouts support cable routing into the enclosure.

Check the charger specification

Choose this model where the circuit design specifies 40A B curve overcurrent protection and Type A residual-current protection. B curve describes the overcurrent characteristic; it does not mean Type B RCD protection. Confirm the charger’s DC residual-current and open-PEN protection arrangements separately before ordering.

Installation notes

Installation and commissioning must be carried out by a qualified electrician using the instructions supplied with the assembly and the EV charger.

  • Confirm the specified current rating, trip curve, residual-current type, cable design and disconnection requirements before selecting the unit.
  • Check the charger’s DC residual-current protection and the installation’s open-PEN protection arrangements separately.
  • Use a suitable dry indoor location for the IP40 enclosure and preserve the enclosure protection when making cable entries.
  • Follow the supplied connection diagram, terminal markings and tightening instructions. Complete the required inspection and testing before use.

FAQs

Is this the right unit for my EV charger?

It is the 40A B curve, Type A RCBO version with Type 2 surge protection. Match those requirements to the charger manufacturer’s instructions and the circuit design. Charger power alone does not determine the correct protective device.

Does Type A mean it provides separate 6mA smooth DC protection?

No. Type A describes AC and pulsating DC residual-current detection. Do not assume this assembly replaces any separate DC detection required by the charger installation. Confirm what is built into the charger and what external protection its manufacturer specifies.

Does this include open-PEN fault protection?

Open-PEN detection is not part of the listed RCBO-and-SPD configuration. Your installer must confirm the earthing arrangement and whether the charger or a separate device provides any required open-PEN protection.

Can I mount this unit outside?

The WMRC40BSP enclosure is IP40 and intended for a suitable dry indoor location. Compare the IP65 WPRC40BSP if your design requires an enclosure with greater protection against water ingress.

What do the two RCBO handles tell the electrician?

Whitecliffe describes the black handle as the MCB function and the white handle as the RCD function. A black-handle-only trip indicates overload or short circuit; both handles tripping indicates a residual-current fault. Faults should be investigated by a qualified electrician.

Does “four module” mean four spare circuits?

No. It describes the enclosure capacity. The supplied RCBO and SPD occupy space within it; this is a dedicated protection assembly, not a board advertised with four spare outgoing ways.
