Heat Pump Consumer Units

Our heat pump consumer units and heat pump boards are built for dedicated air source, ground source and hybrid renewable heating supplies. They give installers a clear route for specifying RCD protection, RCBO protection and surge protection devices where required for inverter-driven heat pump loads.

Use this range when you need a dedicated heat pump power supply board rather than trying to adapt a standard domestic consumer unit. Options include pre-configured boards, Type A or Type B RCD protection, RCBO capacity and enclosures suited to renewable heating installations.

Heat pump circuits can place different demands on the electrical installation because of inverter-driven equipment, start-up current, control gear and wider renewable system integration. Choosing the right board helps keep the installation cleaner, easier to inspect and easier to expand later.

  • Built for heat pump installs – suitable for air source, ground source and hybrid renewable systems
  • RCD and RCBO options – choose suitable protection for the circuit design and manufacturer requirements
  • SPD-ready protection – helps protect sensitive inverter and control equipment from transient overvoltage
  • Installer-focused setup – useful where a dedicated heat pump fuse box or consumer unit is preferred

For related protection options, view our Type B RCDs, RCBOs, consumer units and electrical enclosures.

Choosing the Right Consumer Unit for a Heat Pump

A dedicated heat pump consumer unit gives the installer a cleaner way to separate the heat pump supply, protective devices and surge protection from the rest of the property installation.

For air source and ground source heat pump installs, the key questions are usually simple: what load is being supplied, what RCD type is required, whether RCBO protection is preferred, and whether surge protection should be included at the board or upstream.

Heat Pump Board, Heat Pump Fuse Box or Consumer Unit?

Installers and buyers often use these terms interchangeably. In practice, most searches for a heat pump board or heat pump fuse box refer to a dedicated consumer unit or enclosure used to supply and protect the heat pump circuit.

This page is focused on electrical supply and protection equipment, not replacement PCB control boards inside the heat pump appliance itself.

RCD and RCBO Protection for Heat Pumps

Heat pump installs may require careful RCD selection because many systems use inverter-driven equipment. Depending on the appliance manufacturer guidance and circuit design, this can mean using Type A RCD protection, Type B RCD protection or RCBO-based circuit protection.

  • Type A RCDs – commonly used where suitable for the equipment and manufacturer requirements
  • Type B RCDs – used where DC residual currents may need to be accounted for
  • RCBOs – combine overcurrent and residual current protection for individual circuits
  • Surge protection – helps protect heat pump inverter and control equipment from voltage spikes

For standalone protection components, browse our Type B RCDs, RCDs and RCBOs.

When to Use a Dedicated Heat Pump Consumer Unit

A dedicated board is often the cleaner option where the heat pump needs its own supply arrangement, additional protective devices or future renewable expansion.

  • Air source heat pump installations where a separate supply board is preferred
  • Ground source heat pump systems with higher electrical demand
  • Hybrid renewable installs combining heat pumps with solar PV, battery storage or EV charging
  • Retrofit projects where the existing consumer unit has limited spare capacity
  • Light commercial installs where a clearer distribution setup is needed

Surge Protection for Heat Pump Supplies

Heat pumps include sensitive electronic components, including inverters and control equipment. Where surge protection is required or specified, an SPD-ready heat pump board can help protect the system and simplify the install.

For wider renewable setups, you may also need to coordinate protection across surge protection devices, three-phase boards, EV-ready consumer units and PME fault detection units.

Heat Pump Consumer Unit FAQs

Do I need a separate consumer unit for a heat pump?

Many installations use a dedicated consumer unit or board for the heat pump supply, especially where the existing board has limited space or the installer wants clearer circuit separation.

What RCD should be used for a heat pump?

That depends on the heat pump manufacturer’s requirements and the circuit design. Type A protection may be suitable for some systems, while Type B RCD protection may be required where DC residual currents need to be considered.

Can I use an RCBO for a heat pump?

Yes, where suitable for the circuit. An RCBO provides overcurrent and residual current protection in one device, which can make fault separation cleaner.

Is this the same as a heat pump control board?

No. This category is for electrical consumer units and protection boards used to supply heat pump installations. It does not cover internal PCB control boards inside the heat pump unit.

Do heat pumps need surge protection?

Surge protection may be required depending on the installation and risk assessment. It is often specified to help protect inverter-driven equipment and sensitive control electronics.
