EV RCBOs for Dedicated EV Charger Circuits

EV RCBOs provide combined overcurrent and residual current protection for dedicated EV charger circuits. Built with Type A detection and high-immunity filtering, they prevent nuisance tripping caused by the harmonics, pulsed DC leakage and switching noise common in modern EV chargers.

Most EV chargers include their own 6mA DC protection module, so the correct protective device is a Type A RCBO with stable performance under DC offset and electrical noise. High-immunity Type A RCBOs ensure smooth operation while maintaining full 30mA earth-leakage protection for the circuit.

  • Type A protection – required for EV chargers under 18th Edition
  • High immunity design – prevents false trips from harmonics
  • B & C curve options – suited to both domestic and light commercial loads
  • 6A–40A ratings – covers all common EV charger demands
  • Single-pole and 2-pole versions depending on the installation

These RCBOs are widely used across EV charger installations because they meet modern leakage-detection requirements while providing reliable disconnection without nuisance tripping.

What Is an EV RCBO?

An EV RCBO is a Type A, high-immunity RCBO suitable for electric vehicle charger circuits. It provides overcurrent and 30mA residual current protection while remaining stable under the DC leakage and switching noise produced by EV chargers.

Why EV Chargers Need Type A RCBOs

EV chargers generate pulsed DC leakage, which Type AC devices cannot detect. The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations require EV circuits to be protected by a Type A device (or in rare cases a Type B device, where no 6mA DC module exists inside the charger).

  • Correct leakage detection for EV charging equipment
  • Prevents non-tripping faults caused by DC components
  • Ensures compliance with modern EV installation requirements

High Immunity for EV Installations

EV chargers often introduce electrical noise into the supply due to internal switching circuits and power electronics. High-immunity RCBOs filter out this interference, ensuring that the RCBO only trips when a genuine fault is present.

Suitable Circuit Ratings

Typical EV chargers draw between 16A and 40A depending on the model and supply. This category includes all relevant ratings used for EV installations:

  • 6A–16A: older chargers or limited-supply installs
  • 20A–32A: standard domestic wallbox chargers
  • 40A: high-demand or commercial charger units

B Curve vs C Curve EV RCBOs

B Curve: Used on circuits with predictable load behaviour and lower inrush.

C Curve: Used where chargers create moderate inrush currents during startup.

Compliance & Standards

All EV RCBOs in this category comply with BS EN 61009 and support full compliance with BS 7671 (18th Edition), including Amendment 2 requirements for EV charger installations.

Installer Benefits

Using the correct RCBO simplifies EV charger installation, reduces callbacks and ensures stable operation over time. High-immunity Type A devices provide dependable protection without nuisance tripping and are trusted across both domestic and commercial EV projects.
