MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) protect against overloads and short circuits, RCDs (Residual Current Devices) guard against earth leakage, and RCBOs combine both protections in a single device – now the preferred option for many UK domestic and commercial installs.
- Type B, C & D breakers – suitable for different load types and fault conditions
- Compact RCD enclosures – ideal for garages, outdoor feeds, and sub-circuits
- Type A & Type B RCBOs – futureproof installs with advanced fault coverage
- BS EN certified – tested and compliant with UK wiring regulations
All products are clearly labelled, warrantied for 2 years, and available with next-day UK delivery if ordered before 2pm. See our returns policy for hassle-free returns.

Understanding Circuit Protection
Every electrical installation in the UK relies on the right circuit protection to keep people and property safe. Under the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, MCBs, RCDs, and RCBOs each play a critical role in managing faults and preventing serious damage or injury.
MCBs – Overload & Short Circuit Protection
Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) automatically trip if a circuit draws more current than it can safely handle, or if a short circuit occurs. They are available in different trip curves (B, C, D) to match the type of load – from standard domestic circuits to high inrush motors and industrial equipment.
Installer favourite: 10kA MCBs for domestic and light commercial circuits.
RCDs – Earth Leakage Protection
Residual Current Devices (RCDs) are designed to protect people by disconnecting the supply if they detect current leaking to earth – a sign of electric shock risk or faulty equipment. They are mandatory on most UK final circuits and are typically rated at 30mA for personal protection.
Example product: 2-Pole A-Type 100mA Time Delay RCD, suited for submain and select commercial installs.
RCBOs – Combined Protection
Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent (RCBO) combines the functions of an MCB and an RCD in a single unit. This gives each circuit its own dedicated protection, reducing nuisance tripping and aligning with modern best practice for new builds and upgrades.
Best-seller: A-Type RCBO – available in multiple ratings for modern domestic installs.
Key Buying Considerations
- Type A or Type B devices – Type A is now standard, while Type B covers DC leakage common in EV chargers, heat pumps, and solar systems.
- Trip curve selection – B-curve for domestic, C-curve for commercial, D-curve for industrial/high inrush loads.
- Current rating – match the breaker to the cable size and expected load to avoid nuisance trips.
- Single vs double pole – choose based on isolation requirements and application.

Common Questions
Do I need an RCBO or an RCD?
RCBOs are now widely preferred as they protect individual circuits and avoid losing power to the whole board when one circuit trips. RCDs are still common in older setups and for grouped circuits.
What’s the difference between Type A and Type AC RCDs?
Type A units detect both AC and pulsed DC leakage and are required for modern electronics, EV chargers, and heat pumps. Type AC is being phased out for most applications in the UK.
Can I mix MCBs, RCDs and RCBOs?
Yes – many consumer units are designed to house a combination. For new installs, RCBOs are usually recommended for maximum safety and flexibility.
