6kA MCBs for Standard Domestic & Light Commercial Circuits

6kA MCBs are miniature circuit breakers designed for use on circuits with standard domestic or light commercial fault levels. They provide overload and short-circuit protection for final circuits in most homes, small offices and general-purpose boards where the prospective fault current remains within 6,000 A.

These devices are the typical choice for consumer units and small distribution boards, covering lighting, socket circuits, immersion heaters, small motors and general fixed loads. Available in a full range of current ratings and tripping curves, they allow installers to match protection to circuit design and load characteristics.

  • 6kA breaking capacity for standard domestic installations
  • B and C curve options for different load types
  • Ratings from 6A upwards for lighting, sockets and appliance circuits
  • Single-module DIN-rail format for quick fitment
  • Reliable disconnection in typical household fault conditions

6kA MCBs are used in the majority of residential properties and smaller commercial units where fault level calculations confirm that 6kA breaking capacity is sufficient for safe operation.

What Is a 6kA MCB?

A 6kA MCB is a miniature circuit breaker that can safely interrupt fault currents up to 6,000 amps without damage. It protects circuits from overloads and short-circuits, and is the standard device used in most domestic consumer units.

Where 6kA MCBs Are Used

  • Domestic consumer units in typical houses and flats
  • Small offices and light commercial boards with moderate fault levels
  • Lighting circuits including LED and traditional fittings
  • Socket and ring main circuits
  • General fixed appliances such as immersion heaters and small motors

B Curve vs C Curve 6kA MCBs

B Curve: Trips between 3–5 times rated current. Typically used for lighting, socket outlets and general resistive loads.

C Curve: Trips between 5–10 times rated current. Suitable for circuits with modest inrush currents, such as small motors or equipment with higher startup demand.

When 6kA Is the Right Choice

A 6kA MCB is appropriate where the calculated or measured prospective fault current at the point of installation does not exceed 6kA. This is the case for the vast majority of domestic properties and many small commercial installations.

  • Standard domestic fault levels
  • Consumer units fed from typical low-voltage networks
  • Boards located away from the transformer or service head

Compliance & Standards

All 6kA MCBs in this category are designed to comply with BS EN 60898 and meet the performance expectations of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. They are suitable for new installations, upgrades and replacement work in standard fault-level environments.

Installer Benefits

6kA MCBs offer dependable protection and predictable tripping performance for everyday circuits. With a wide range of ratings and curves, they give electricians the flexibility to design safe, compliant boards without over-specifying devices where higher breaking capacities are not required.
