This PME Loss Consumer Unit provides full fault isolation and surge protection for EV charging setups without the need for an earth rod. Designed to comply with the latest 18th Edition Amendment 2 requirements, the unit automatically monitors supply voltage and disconnects all conductors if a PME or PEN fault is detected - ensuring a safe, regulation-ready install for domestic and commercial EV charge points.

It’s ideal for EV chargers that already include DC leakage protection but lack in-built PME fault detection. The compact, IP65-rated enclosure makes it suitable for outdoor wall-mounting in residential or commercial spaces.

    Available Variants:

    • WPEPME08/C40: 40A Type A RCBO, PME fault detection, IP65 enclosure
    • WPEPME08/SP: As above + Type 2 Surge Protection
    • WPKPME08/C40: 40A MCB, PME fault detection, plastic IP65 case
    • WPKPME08/SP: MCB + SPD + PME detection in one pre-configured unit

Key features across the range include:

    • PME/PEN Fault Detection: Disconnects live, neutral & earth on fault detection
    • Reset Behaviour: Auto-resets after undervoltage, manual reset after overvoltage
    • Type A 40A RCBO or 40A MCB options depending on variant
    • IP65 rated enclosures – suitable for outdoor wall mounting
    • Pre-configured unit – wired and ready to install

What does PME fault detection mean?

It detects dangerous faults in the PEN conductor (combined earth and neutral) and disconnects all poles - live, neutral, and earth - to prevent electric shock risks, especially outdoors. See our full PME Fault Detection range.

Do I still need an earth rod with this unit?

No - this unit replaces the need for an earth rod in EV charger installs, provided the charger already has DC leakage protection built in.

What's the difference between RCBO and MCB variants?

RCBO variants offer both overload and earth leakage protection. MCB variants protect against overcurrent only and assume the charger has internal RCD functionality.

What happens when a PME fault is detected?

The unit isolates the entire supply - including earth - within 4–5 seconds. It will automatically reset after undervoltage but requires manual reset for overvoltage faults.

Is this suitable for outdoor use?

Yes - all variants are housed in IP65-rated enclosures for weatherproof protection.

    • RCBO/MCB Rating: 40A
    • RCBO Type: Type A, Double Pole, C Curve (WPE variants)
    • Voltage Range: Actively monitors 207V to 253V AC
    • Contactor: 4P 63A (RCBO variants)
    • Surge Protection: Type 2 SPD included in SP variants
    • Enclosure: IP65 rated polycarbonate or ABS housing
    • Dimensions (mm): 295 (W) x 255 (H) x 140 (D)
    • Standard: BS EN 61439-3, BS 7671
    • Certifications: UKCA, CE

This PME unit is pre-wired and ready to install by a qualified electrician. Ensure mounting is secure and in a well-ventilated location if used outdoors.

    • Connect RCBO or MCB terminals as labelled — fully isolate before install
    • PME detection circuit monitors voltage continuously; no manual testing required
    • SPD (if fitted) must be connected with short, direct earth path
    • After over-voltage trip, reset via the red button once supply stabilises
